Power suffering

Article Abstract:

Saint Catherine of Siena was known for her extreme acts of self-penance such as solitary confinement, flagellation, and fasting, which eventually led to her death in 1380. She had her first vision at the age of 6, and pledged herself as Christ's bride at age 7. This mysticism and self-penance were common among very religious women in the 13th and 14th century, because women who claimed religious authority had to temper that authority with extreme self-sacrifice. Otherwise, they were condemned as heretics or witches, and punished or executed. Today, suffering in women is still equated with virtue, but women often suffer for no divine reason.

Part L: how tough will it be?

Article Abstract:

The UK government is planning to improve energy conservation of buildings by introducing a strict new set of regulations governing areas such as air-tightness, insulation and lighting. The new energy regulations may result in existing home owners facing the prospect of undertaking a 300 pounds sterling survey on a house they wish to sell and having the work carried out before a sale can be completed. New housebuilders are keen to promote energy efficiency as part of a house sale.

Coal-mine canaries

Article Abstract:

Those angry at the legal system over poor handling of divorces ignore ways the system is addressing that problem as well as the tools it has for preventing legal abuses. Certainly an adversarial system has its drawbacks, especially in inherently emotional cases such as divorce. Most of the complaints, though, come from a few who have lost unusual cases. Ultimately the profession should not ignore these voices, as they are often the first signs of where reform is truly needed.
