Daley aide moves out of loop, in-house; Chicago ex-corp. counsel finds security at U. of C

Article Abstract:

Susan Sher resigned her politically influential job as Chicago, IL corporate counsel on Jun 1, 1997 to become general counsel and vice president of the University of Chicago Health System. Sher, who was the first woman to hold the city post, believes that her new job benefits her career as well as her family. As Chicago corporate counsel, Sher masterminded a legal move that that blocked the Illinois state government from establishing another major airport south of the city. Her new position enables her to stay involved with public policy and to help establish an HMO geared toward Chicago's poor.

Do 'hybrids' compromise ADR benefits? Binding outcomes cast in doubt forums' informality

Article Abstract:

Critics of mediation arbitration and binding mediation charge that these hybrid forms of alternative dispute resolution combine the processes of mediator or peacemaker and arbitrator or decisionmaker in a conflicting way and that the binding nature of proceedings invites abuse of their informality. Bifurcation of the hearings would, however, lessen the hybrid method's biggest attraction, their lowered costs and quicker rulings.

Article Abstract:

Consumer products and services companies are often taking the conservative course of action and settling claims that promise to produce negative publicity.
