Death of the price-discrimination law: illegal 'buying-power' as a post-merger 'efficiency.'

Article Abstract:

The giant US retail chains routinely flout antitrust law by inducing from their suppliers lower prices than competitors have to pay despite the absence of greater efficiencies from their sales volume. The giant US retail chains have never been able to demonstrate an 'efficiency' basis for the much lower prices they extract from the smaller US manufacturers. 'Power-buying' is common although illegal thanks to enforcement agencies' willingness to ignore the law. Indeed, large corporations give the post-merger enhancement of their buying power as a reason the merger should be allowed.

Clinton revival of U.S. 'trusts': redistributing income from wages to profits

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton's policy of encouraging corporate mergers all the way up to 2-firm duopolies and even single-firm monopolies in railroads and aircraft has led to dramatically increased income inequality. CEO salaries and corporate profits have gone way up, while labor wages have declined. Clinton's reason for this policy is hard to guess and could range from a wish to maximize campaign contributions from these monopolies to a sincere belief in the monopolies as an industrial model. Excerpts from antitrust Internet discussion groups are given.
