Another broken trust

Article Abstract:

The article describes the litigation engendered by the 1887 General Allotment Act, a law designed to break up the tribal system and lead to Native Americans' financial independence by doling out to them parcels of land, allowing them the income from activities such as oil leases on this land. The government found, however, that it needed to step in as trustee and pay the Indians income because few of the Indians had the expertise to manage the land. Slipshod recordkeeping and a slow probate system were just two of the problems in this system.
