Dispute resolution & workplace violence

Article Abstract:

Dispute resolution techniques help heal underlying emotional injuries that cause workplace violence. Community mediation programs bring disputants together for face-to-face meetings that promote understanding of problematic issues. The goal is to reestablish workplace harmony. Disputant resolution is important in an era when changing workplace conditions create employee insecurities that lead to hostile feelings, the worst example of which was the 1991 shooting of coworkers by a disgruntled postal employee.

Reducing violence in U.S. schools

Article Abstract:

Mediation and arbitration techniques can be used to reduce violence in schools. Peer mediation, mediation between teachers and students and programs that help students create better relationships can be effective tools. Violence in schools has been demonstrated by murders that took place in Oregon and Arkansas in 1998. Schools should be prepared for violence and administrators should look for signs in students that indicate they have a predilection for violence.
