A sales pitch won't sway this buyer

Article Abstract:

Andrew D. Hendry, the senior vice-pres, general counsel and secretary of the Colgate-Palmolive Co, supervises a department of 20 lawyers in New York and 40 abroad. The company spends about $20 mil yearly on outside counsel. Hendry feels one of the responsibilities of the general counsel is to make sure the company's ethical compass remains on course. Since Colgate deals in consumer products, foreign divisions must, according to Hendry, be much closer to their culture.
