Environmental courses enjoy a surge of student popularity

Article Abstract:

Professor Robert V. Percival claims in an Environment magazine article that many law schools are departing from their traditional generalist approach and offering advanced environmental law degrees and specialized environmental study programs. He found through studying law school directories from 1971 to 1992 that there was a 52% expansion in environmental law offerings between 1971 and 1975, with a 69% expansion since the late 1980s. Percival attributes the renewed interest in this legal area to, among other factors, the rapid growth of environmental regulation.

Ohio dean sets up think tank in bid to provide public service

Article Abstract:

Thomas D. Crandall, new dean of the University of Toledo College of Law, is disproving the idea that higher education is irrelevant to the general public. He hopes his brainchild, the Legal Institute of the Great Lakes, will be a think tank and repository of legal information about the area. Betsy Levin, executive director of the Association of American Law Schools, supports town-grown programs but wants universities to remember that their most important job is educating students.

AALS conventioneers discuss how to teach class and poverty

Article Abstract:

One of the seminars at the 1993 Assn of American Law Schools (AALS) convention dealt with the inclusion of social issues such as poverty and class in the law school curriculum. The seminar was developed because of a perceived lack of understanding of better-off professors and students about the causes of poverty. The seminar also hoped to foster insights about connections between legal areas such as tax law and entitlements.
