Article Abstract:

European Union member states will complete global deregulation by the end of 1997. Some countries, including Spain, Ireland and Greece, will become fully liberalised after this date. The world trade organisation treaty provides international guidelines for industry protection. European countries wishing to join the European Union will not do so until the year 2002. Some, including the Czech Republic and Poland, are likely to delay accepting membership until their economies are adequately prepared. Other matters are discussed.

Commentary: Success or failure of EMU

Article Abstract:

Success or failure of the EMU will be determined by whether monetary policy will be able to consistently underpin non-inflationary growth and whether conflicts with Ecofin and Euro-X the ministerial committees, can be avoided. Inflationary pressures should be moderated, as product markets are becoming more open, although labour markets remain diverse. There is a need for government job incentives to work closely with those who actually create jobs.
