FTC approval of the Boeing-McDonnell merger: the 'collapse of antitrust enforcement.' (letter and press statement expressing opposition to the FTC's decision)

Article Abstract:

The July 1, 1997 FTC announcement that it would not challenge the Boeing Aircraft-McDonnell Douglas horizontal merger represents the FTC's disregard of its antitrust enforcement responsibilities. The subsidized European firm, Airbus, is the only remaining Boeing competitor in manufacturing large commercial aircraft and the merger exacerbates existing barriers to entry into the business. The trend of FTC selective antitrust enforcement against less politically powerful smaller corporations is ominous.

Nader conference on the Microsoft monopoly: a 'snoozer' without the stars

Article Abstract:

The Ralph Nader conference on the Microsoft monopoly was uninteresting and ineffectual, and the star invitees such as Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and Vice Pres Al Gore did not attend. Gore apparently shares Pres Clinton's disdain for antimonopoly policy and Microsoft monopolist and CEO Bill Gates was probably sensible not to attend. The speakers who appeared were mainly technocrats lacking in antitrust experience and understanding who failed to bring the issues to life.
