Gray market goods barred by judge

Article Abstract:

A federal court has told the US Customs Service to forbid importation of two soaps made in England by an affiliate of Lever Brothers Co. The lower court had ruled that they could be imported under the "affiliate" exception to Section 42 of the Lanham Act. Members of the United States Trademark Assn are divided on the gray market issue, with the manufacturers favoring import bans and retailers resisting them as interferences with their wish to get quality goods to buyers at the lowest possible prices.

Attorneys' final frenzy over Harris; all-night duel

Article Abstract:

There was a whole night of legal wrangling between the liberal Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals and the conservative US Supreme Court before Robert Alton Harris' trip to the gas chamber. This final night was preceded by a plea for clemency on the grounds that his fetal alcohol syndrome made Harris incapable of premeditated murder. California Governor Pete Wilson denied this plea. Harris' death in the gas chamber was California's first execution in 25 years.

Court limits suits by lawyers; in-house counsel covered?

Article Abstract:

A California appellate court has ruled in Santa Clara County Counsel Attorneys Assn v Woodside that government attorneys may not sue their clients, and critics of the decision fear that this ruling applies to corporate counsel as well. The court acknowledged that their ruling left the county counsel association without a means to enforce the collective bargaining rights they enjoyed by law.
