He insures that legal bills are fair

Article Abstract:

Michael J. McLaughlin, the senior vice pres and general counsel of New York Life Insurance Co, the fourth largest US insurance co and, specializing in life insurance but also with a group of products also including annuities and mutual funds, heads a department of 65 attorneys all working at Manhattan headquarters. Although New York Life relies on 400 forms to handle challenges to claim denials, McLaughlin is trying to reduce the number of outside firms to 100. This would enable the company to negotiate a better fee structure and have other advantages.

Pension fund GC: not a retiring sort

Article Abstract:

Charles H Stamm, the executive vice pres and general counsel of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Ass'n College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF),with various insurance products giving coverage to the 2 mil people working in US educational and research institutions, is the largest retirement system in the world. TIAA-CREF has more than $230bil in assets under its management and as such is the largest securities investor in the world. All of TIAA-CREF's 70 lawyers work in Manhattan headquarters, with ERISA being a special expertise.

Daughter counsels father, CEO brother; family ties persuade a lawyer to take on general counsel role

Article Abstract:

The hotel company Cooper Cos is a family business with daughter Laurie Cooper as general counsel and vice pres, a role her father persuaded her to take on when she had never been interested, always having assumed in law school that she would go into public interest law. Her father decided to employ his daughter when his most trusted partner left his most trusted outside counsel, the Memphis firm Harkavy, Shainberg, Kosten, Kaplan and Dunstan. Cooper became the first in-house attorney in 1995.
