Industry, feds monitor oil royalty suit; official says oil companies owe Texas millions because of underpaid royalties

Article Abstract:

A suit brought by Texas Land Commissioner Gary Mauro on July 14, 1995, alleges eight major oil companies owe the state from $2 million to $10 million because their formula for calculating royalties is wrong. He contends the 'posted' prices that the companies set themselves for each field are 7 cents to $1.95 per barrel below market prices, as seen in the New York Mercantile Exchange. Four private royalty owners have joined the suit, which Mauro hopes to make a class action. It could form the basis for sweeping increases in royalties.

Dissatisfied clients in the litigation regarding the 1989 blast that destroyed Phillips Petroleum's Houston Chemical Complex have charged their attorneys with responsibility for group settlements which gave rise to conflict-of-interest situations when funds were allocated among the claimants. Houston's Umphrey, Williams and Bailey is a target of these charges and is being reviewed by outside lawyers.

Noecker, is well-known for its aggressive, litigious approach. The work environment is high-pressure and turnover is high.
