Main Street decisions

Article Abstract:

US Supreme Court decisions often affect attorneys and the general populace in ways not generally perceived. The Court's work adds to the US Code, for example, and many cases center on fundamental issues even though the decisions themselves are not considered blockbuster rulings. A survey of the Court's 1996-97 term reveals important rulings in the areas of public employment law, family law, ERISA, removal jurisdiction, property rights, court access, and the English-only movement.

Stirring memories of racism; Japanese-Americans in San Francisco accuse YWCA of exploiting Alien Land Law

Article Abstract:

The article covers Soko Bukai v. YWCA of San Francisco, in which the Japanese-American community accuses the YWCA of trying to profit from the 1913 Alien Land Law, which when it was enacted barred Japanese immigrants from owning land in the United States. That community claims the San Francisco Y agreed to hold the property in trust for the Japanese community and that the 1996 attempt to sell the property is a breach of that trust.

Discomfiting glimpses of (hopefully) old ways

Article Abstract:

Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg's account of her career during her confirmation hearings for a seat on the US Supreme Court showed the sex discrimination she experienced at the beginning of her legal career. The hearings reminded Americans of how recently the US began to struggle with minorities' equality before the law issues.
