Naming children as beneficiaries of retirement plan assets

Article Abstract:

Many factors affect the value of naming a child, grandchild, or other non-spouse as beneficiary to a decedent's retirement account. Even experts may underutilize the benefits of long-term tax deferral, which can, when combined with the Section 691(c) deduction, make such an account worth 85% of its nominal value and 190% of the value of a similar cash bequest. Non-charitable beneficiaries may benefit more than charitable ones from a tax-deferred retirement account. Factors affecting these calculations are considered.

Using life insurance in qualified retirement plans

Article Abstract:

Pension subtrusts and profit-sharing plan purchases of second-to-die life insurance policies are two methods for excluding life insurance proceeds from estates when qualified retirement plans hold life insurance. Typically, life insurance is added to retirement plans to provide estate liquidity. Making sure these insurance policies are excluded from estates can result in huge estate tax savings for beneficiaries of large estates.
