Old world new order; tips for U.S. lawyers in Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

Lawyers doing business in Eastern Europe will find that the following pointers will facilitate their stay. Visit the US embassy first to obtain up-to-date information. Learn a few phrases of the local language, to show interest in the local culture and ways of doing business, an interest foreign hosts appreciate. Hiring a taxi for the day is inexpensive by Western standards and well worth the money, since local public transit service may not be reliable. Eastern Europeans tend toward formality in their business dealings, and foreigners should do likewise.

Too many lawyers? Restoring a sense of community

Article Abstract:

The increase in law school graduates over the last 20 years has led to a declining kinship in the legal community. Pressure to log many billable hours and to specialize earlier in one's career leaves lawyers with little time to consult with each other informally. Bar association participation has fallen off as well, reducing opportunities to engage as colleagues. Bar leaders need to make efforts to restore a sense of community to an increasingly disconnected profession.
