Poll: more lawyers see O.J. walking; 70 percent now say Simpson will go free. Most say race is a factor

Article Abstract:

The number of attorneys who think O.J. Simpson will be acquitted on charges of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend Ronald Goldman seems to be going up. According to a Feb 1995 poll, 69% of attorneys think Simpson will be acquitted, an 8% increase from a Sept 1994 poll. Many of the attorneys polled thought race would be a factor in Simpson's acquittal, with 60% saying the race issue worked in the defense's favor. Some observers think the jury will hang due to the race issue. Almost 3/4 of respondents believe the Simpson trial has diminished public respect for the judicial system.

What did O.J.'s lawyers hope to gain?

Article Abstract:

O.J. Simpson's defense lawyers violated legal ethics by withholding evidence from the prosecution, raising questions about the right of defense lawyers to the prosecution's case. The belief that defense lawyers always used shady tactics persisted as late as 1967 but most defense lawyers are court-appointed and do not have time to bend the truth. However, Simpsons' lawyers invoked the questionable image of defense lawyers by violating open discovery in a move that does not appear to serve any purpose.
