Study: lack of U.S. lawyers adds to deficit

Article Abstract:

A report was released on the cost of government mismanagement, fraud and abuse during the Bush and Reagan administrations which claims that $311 billion in losses resulted from the poor enforcement of laws. Rep John Conyers released the report which alleges that $300 million a year is lost because his committee does not have enough lawyers to pursue directors of failed savings and loan institutions. Much is lost in failed attempts to collect civil awards to the government, and capital punishment is extremely cost-ineffective.

Reno's colleagues say Clinton's hit pay dirt

Article Abstract:

Colleagues of Dade County, FL, state's attorney Janet Reno say President Clinton has chosen someone of sterling integrity in naming her attorney general-designate. They also feel that Dade County's problems of race relations, immigration and crime provide a microcosm of the problems plaguing the country and make Reno uniquely qualified for the job. Proponents downplay her lack of federal experience. Voters in the heavily Republican Dade County have returned Democrat Reno to her position five times.
