'Return to sender' won't cut it; although privileged, misdirected e-mail on the Internet poses risks

Article Abstract:

The ethical questions raised by the increased use of electronic mail as a medium of attorney-client communications include whether using e-mail violates the duty of attorney-client confidentiality and whether its use waives the attorney-client privilege or fails to establish the privilege at all. Bar associations in a number of states have held that lawyers can send unencryped e-mail messages to clients without violating the ethical duty of confidentiality. Congress and the state legislatures have also protected the prvileged nature of electronic communications.

Securing the premises: simple changes in office policy, setup can safeguard a small practice

Article Abstract:

Small law firms can make easy changes in their office policies to improve their physical safety and security. For example, electronic door chimes serve as guards to announce comings or goings of people. Front desk staff should never give home phone numbers or addresses, and should always ask the business of visitors. Professional courtesy is paramount for preventing violence. Police can also be consulted for easy security improvements.
