Small steps; specialization slowly gains ground

Article Abstract:

The ABA House of Delegates took action at the 1993 Annual Meeting which moved the organization closer to establishing attorney specialization. Pursuant to recommendations by the Standing Committee on Specialization, the body gave three organizations the authority for the certification of attorney-specialists: the National Board of Trial Advocacy, the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification and the Commercial Law League of America's Academy of Commercial and Bankruptcy Law Specialists. A system with more specialists might lead to general practitioners' becoming gatekeepers to other areas of the law.

GOP proposals get cool Miami reception

Article Abstract:

Planks in the Republican 'Contract With America' stirred controversy at the ABA Midyear Meeting in February. The central issue was the Common Sense Legal Reform Act (HR 10), which would cut funding to the Legal Services Corp, make litigation losers pay legal fees, and make other changes. ABA President George Bushnell and other leaders criticized the proposed changes, and even those who support reforms found the bills in Congress flawed.
