Audrey Rubin, the chief legal officer of Grant Thornton LLP, an international accounting, tax and consulting firm with services including management consulting, information technology, tax and assurance services and global business solutions and 18,000 employees worldwide, directs a small legal department proactive in nature and stressing business solutions. Since Thornton staffs her in-house department leanly, she relies heavily on outside counsel to give immediate, specialized advice and to provide additional staff if needed.

Pamela B Strobel, the senior vice pres and general counsel of Commonwealth Edison, a subsidiary of Chicago's Unicom Corp and producer, distributor and seller of electricity to wholesale and retail customers serving 70% of the state's population, heads a department of 29 lawyers divided into four general areas of practice. The sections are a litigation group, a corporate and commercial group, a regulatory group and a labor and employment group. Within an area is an employee benefits and a real estate lawyer.
