Technology teaches old patent dogs new tricks: patents in electronic form and other new technologies propel practitioners into 21st century

Article Abstract:

Electronic patents are revolutionizing the work of patent attorneys, though other modern tools of storing, transmitting, and analyzing patents appear less useful. Patent attorneys have long resisted using new technology, but electronic patents permit faster, more accurate, and more efficient work, so many clients will insist on their use, and firms that start doing so sooner will have a greater competitive advantage. Electronic patents synchronize ASCII text with other patent elements, permit electronic notation, and more.

Once just entertainment, CDs are now a fast, efficient way to access information

Article Abstract:

CD-ROM technology has developed enough that it now seriously challenges both on-line and printed forms of information for law offices. The CD could always hold vast amounts of data but early drives were slow, hardware was proprietary, and selection was poor. Now CD-ROM offers speed and flexibility comparable to the best on-line services, its cost compares well with other formats, and it often carries information not available through print or on-line. Data compression techniques and read-write disks promise more growth.

Law schools, libraries look to own private 'nets; the boon to academia includes multimedia course materials, online study groups and more

Article Abstract:

Intranets already are mature enough to offer law libraries and law schools many benefits, and the technology is sure to improve further. These private forms of the Internet accomodate different platforms, make it easy to share information with groups, facilitate the use of electronic teaching materials, and allow the re-use of material created using most software. Thus far the Internet has made these institutions a valuable source of knowledge, but intranets can contribute to their central purpose.
