The evolution of business' role in society

Article Abstract:

Multinational corporations should be active participants in the development of social policy in the global economy. Although these corporations were distrusted in the 1960's, they are clearly an agent for change in the 1990's following the failure of socialism and the emergence of South and East Asia as an economic force. However, social activists and corporations have failed in previous attempts to address societal problems. Multinationals should help to advance world democracy and responsible capitalism through proper participation in the public agenda, rather than doing harm by misusing power and increasing economic inequity.
