The praying fields of Texas; Supreme Court will decide whether students may lead prayers at high school football games

Article Abstract:

The pending US Supreme Court ruling Santa Fe Independent School District v Doe is discussed, and presents the issue of possible violation of the establishment clause by student-led prayers at high school football games.The Christian legal movement has brought this issue to the fore.

The wavering line; swing votes make the difference in two church-state cases

Article Abstract:

Two US Supreme Court church-state cases are discussed, Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, which dealt with student-led prayers at school football games, and Mitchell v. Helms, whch dealt with government aid to parochial schools The rulings were handed down during the 1999-2000 term.

Supreme spree: court decides on everything from federalism to the Internet

Article Abstract:

A survey of the US Supreme Court's 1996-97 term shows the diversity of the major issues the court handled. The justices overturned popular laws on religious freedom, gun control, and Internet free speech limits. The court's decision on doctor-assisted suicide and class action settlements will have a lasting impact. The decision to uphold Kansas's sexual predator incarceration law could lead other states to adopt similar statutes.
