The state of play: a significant eight months

Article Abstract:

The eight-month period from Aug 1, 1994 to Mar 21, 1995, saw a number of significant developments in occupational health and safety in the UK, both legislative and non-legislative. Major legislative developments include Royal Assent to the Deregulation and Contracting Out Act 1994, eight new sets of regulations, four approved codes of practice, and the end of consultation on several draft regulations and other documents. Non-legislative developments include an occupational safety-related manslaughter conviction, budget cuts and a record low in fatal accidents. Progress and comments on various health and safety subjects are included.

Rimington reflects: a candid valedictory from the HSE's director general of the past 11 years

Article Abstract:

John Rimington's valedictory upon his retirement after 11 years as director general of the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) explores three developments since the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. These are the Health and Safety Commission's survival and the HSE's growth, widening concerns about burdens on industry and deregulation, and the UK's isolation within Europe in its claim that practical reality should drive health and safety. He considers the elimination of corporate apathy one great victory, and considers the continuing relevance of the Robens Report of 1972.
