Defendants in products liability suits against the firearms industry include such defendants as Smith and Wesson Corp, Colt's Manufacturing Co and Ruger and Co, all industry mainstays, as well as three trade associations and a small group of local gun sellers. The complaint claims that gun design should have ensured that only the owner could release the safety. Many characteristics of the gun litigation are similar to the suits against tobacco companies.
