Transforming power: lessons from British electricity restructuring

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the restructuring of the British electric industry sector has important implications for the US electric industry which is also undergoing change. Though the reforms seemed to have accomplished their goals of cost reduction and limited government intervention, flaws in the system started to be exposed. Limitations of the restructuring included the limited number of power generating firms which resulted in a fossil-fuel duopoly which dictated market management.

Regulatory reform in the electric power industry

Article Abstract:

The traditional economic view on the classification of the electric power industry as a natural monopoly is beginning to break down due to factors such as new perspectives on state utility regulation, internal incentive problems of cost-plus pricing and the failure of public regulation and ownershiopp of electric utilities. Countries must adopt a model that utilizes market forces in controlling the electric power industry.
