Trends: Belgium

Article Abstract:

1984 budget proposals are being overseen by the Liberal Christian Socialist coalition. New legislation is veering away from notions of global taxation of taxpayer's income. The basic principles of withholding tax on investment income, real property tax, real property renovation, incentives for equity investors, fiscal security and Social Security are featured. Unaltered provisions include the increased ceiling on professional expenses, the greater tax reductions for dependent children, and universal tax reductions. New legislation has been introduced to heighten the annual limit of tax free indemnities for transport for commuting employees. Each of the changes is listed in light of its legislative basis and political impact.
