Heating up cold crime squads; new emphasis on solving old murders puts defense lawyers in a difficult spot

Article Abstract:

Cold cime squads have come about from two causes, the lower crime rate freeing up investigative resources to investigate old crimes and advances in forensic technology in the areas of ballistics and DNA identification. The rise in cold-crime units has started to lead to more convictions in crimes the police had given up on. "Solvability factors" including a sign a witness lied and the availability of witnesses as well as the availability of viable physical evidence often determine the reopening of a case.
