Without trial lawyers, common law withers

Article Abstract:

Litigators are fast replacing trial lawyers, with potentially disastrous consequences for the health of the common law in general. Trial lawyers focus on settling quickly, and if that fails, on preparing for trial, an experience they relish. Litigators focus on pretrial motions and discovery, often without the discipline imposed by trial preparation. In large cities and large firms few young lawyers now get to try the sorts of cases that build trial-lawyer skills, threatening the trial system's cornerstone.

Unstopped by Blizzard of '96; forget postmen - it was lawyers trudging to work

Article Abstract:

Attorneys and law-firm support staff throughout the Northeast found ways to get their work done despite a monumental blizzard Jan 7 and 8. Many used home-based PCs, fax machines, and other technology, some skied cross-country to work, and a few found nearby hotel rooms. Police took the Supreme Court's justices to work in four-wheel-drive jeeps. The experiences of firms in Hartford, CT, Philadelphia, PA, NYC, and Washington, DC are described.

From 'da Vinci of data,' wisdom on trial graphics; Edward R. Tufte's seminal work on the design of data should be trial lawyers' required reading

Article Abstract:

Edward R. Tufte was a leading authority on information design and has published three acclaimed books on the subject which should be in every law library. Tufte points out that graphics are easy to understand and remember and the principles of graphic design are universal, which is why they are so persuasive. Practical rules about the creation and use of trial graphics developed from Tufte's theory of data graphics are listed.
