Outside extortion: family members forced to pay for inmate safety

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to present the violence behind the bar with the help of the story of Kathy White where her teenager son was sentenced to 15 years for using a gun to steal a pair of tennis shoes. The conclusion states that violence and intimidation behind the bars is not uncommon now.

Death row defense: indigent inmates get poor representation

Article Abstract:

A paper found that about one in four death row inmates are defended by lawyers who are reprimanded, suspended or banned from practicing law by the State Bar of Texas. A list of attorney's who represented each of 461 inmates is compiled to find whether the representations were good or bad.

Suspect contract: Discretionary power held by district attorney highlights possible detainee rights violations

Article Abstract:

The district attorney routinely detained suspects, violating the US Constitution. As a result, the American Civil Liberties Union conducted an investigation into the matter, describing the changes in how detainees are handled by the district attorney's office.
