Playboy wins rights to paintings: magazine wins some, loses some claims to Nagel works

Article Abstract:

The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruling in Playboy Enterprises v. Dumas determined that certain Patrick Nagel artworks were the property of Playboy, others belonged to the artists widow and still others needed to be reconsidered by the lower court. Nagel's work was published in Playboy from 1974 to 1984. Beginning in 1977, Playboy no longer insisted on certain subjects for the artworks. The Court split the works between the parties based on intermittent work-for-hire status, changes in the copyright laws and changes in the legend on Playboy's checks to the artist.

Magazine sues to expedite search of files on Perot

Article Abstract:

The US District Court for the District of Columbia ruled in Oct 1992, that the election was not a sufficient reason to speed up a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for information on presidential candidate Ross Perot. An editor of The Nation had attempted to speed up FOIA requests he had made to the State, Justice and Defense Departments and the CIA, and the agencies had refused. This response was in contrast to the State Department's quick response to fulfill a FOIA request on Bill Clinton.
