Sheriff resells criminals' guns: a look at how murder weapons end up back on the street

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the practice of police departments selling confiscated weapons are examined, focusing on an investigative journalist's story of the practice by Washington state's King County's Sherifff's Department. Topics include the large extent of sales, involvement by gun companies, the impact the story had on city council votes to ban the selling of guns by police departments, and pressure by gun lobbyists to allow police department gun sales.

The Colorado Department of Education releases annual School Accountability Reports (SARs) that report incidence of violence and indiscipline in the stateEs schools. However, an investigation by journalists found a wide variance in how districts disclosed incidents of school violence, and seriously called into question the validity of the information on the SARs.

Issues concerning the relationship between gun violence, especially school violence with guns, and the availability of guns through private sellers are examined. Topics include the ease with which people can buy guns at gun shows and guns sold by police departments that are later used in violent crimes.
