BBC and ITC battle with Labour over political broadcast plans

Article Abstract:

BBC and the Independent Television Commission (ITC) are opposing the Labour Party proposal that calls for the creation of an electoral commission that would have authority to restrict party political broadcasts. The dispute centers on who should make decisions regarding matters that include timing, length and content of party political broadcasts. According to the ITC, the move of the Labour Party could result in unnecessary problems with broadcasting companies. Earlier in 1998, the ITC, BBC, S4C and Radio Authority presented a consultation document, suggesting several modifications that include restricting party political broadcasts to elections.

Article Abstract:

The U. K. government may not be worried now about the goals it plans to meet before turning off analog services with only 29% of homes currently having digital television, however, its increasing importance has prompted the Independent Television Commission and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to perform studies to provide the government with useful information. Broadcast surveyed several retailers selling electronics and found that they are as confused as most people who have not been properly educated about the benefits of digital television and why its being promoted.
