Discreet control

Article Abstract:

Discreet Logic has seen growth of 30-40% in 1996 and is in a very strong position, according to Richard Szalwinski, who co-founded the company in 1991. It has undertaken restructuring, but there are mixed views among observers about whether this will be sufficient to deter a takeover bid. Szalwinski warns against attaching too much importance to the decline in the company's stock over recent months, and points out that it has a strong future as it focuses on the Fire editing system, Vapour virtual sets and the range of compositing tools based around the Flame digital compositing system.

Computing's new contenders

Article Abstract:

Fast-developing technology for the television programme production industry is not yet standardised because complex functionality requirements demand specialised, proprietary designs. Hardware and software manufacturers are developing more powerful machines to cope with a range of tasks, however, such as Silicon Graphic's Onyx super computer. Proprietary manufacturer Quantel has sold specialist machines since 1992. Other manufacturers include Digital, NetPower and Intergraph.
