Dramatising the problems

Article Abstract:

The BBC is attaching great importance to 'Dangerfield,' its new drama series, realising that it will probably never be able to regain its reputation for successful popular fiction if this series fails. So far, the series has attracted around 10 million viewers, but it is too soon to tell whether it will mark the revival of the BBC's drama output. At ITV, drama output has been very successful over recent years in terms of ratings. However, some observers fear that audiences may soon tire of populist drama and believe that too much of ITV's drama output is tied up with returning series.

Industry slams convergence Green Paper as 'damp squib.'

Article Abstract:

The UK television industry has expressed disappointment over the content of the long-awaited communications Green Paper. Broadcasting insiders, who described the Green Paper as 'a damp squib,' 'wet' and 'woolly,' said the document failed to address the question on how the BBC should be regulated in the future. Labour MP John Maxton, a senior member of the Commons' Media Select Committee, also criticized the decision of the government to rule out radical regulatory change in the face of convergence.

C4 uses gay soap to clean up image

Article Abstract:

Channel 4 has commissioned the As Queer As Fuck gay soap opera, touted as the first of its genre in the United Kingdom, to reestablish its image as a broadcaster of cutting-edge drama programs. Channel 4's drama head, Gub Neal, believes that the eight-part As Queer As Fuck soap opera is a celebration of homosexuality and a fresh approach to the issue of being gay. Channel 4, however, is undecided on the possible toning down of the gay series' title prior to its official screening.
