'Europe 1992': the audiovisual challenge

Article Abstract:

The European Community (EC) media policies favor freedom to provide transnational services, but the danger of this position is a possible future cultural homogenization and economic monopolization of Europe. EC media policies were devised with economic rather than cultural concerns in mind. This trend will not disappear after 1992. Smaller member states such as Belgium will need to protect their cultural identity by assigning support of public service broadcasting a high priority. A shift from the emphasis on public service broadcasting to undue commercialization should be avoided.

However, the plan also raised external debt, alienated the people and consequently led to political challenges of the president's authority.
