On the limits of a free press: remote imaging and commercial news gathering

Article Abstract:

Remote imagery offers unlimited access to news and information transcending state and national boundaries. It enables news organizations to gather information even in remote areas utilizing satellites. The Spot Image Corp used space technology during the Gulf Crisis. However, western media's request for unlimited access through satellite technology has prompted governments to set limits to public disclosures of information gathered through remote imagery. The news media has sought to overcome these restrictive government policies by operating their own satellite systems.

The reaction of the African nationalists towards the establishment of the Daily Graphic by the British Mirror Newspaper Company in Ghana in 1950 is discussed. The opposition of the African press and political parties against the Daily Graphic was manifested by a campaign to boycott the newspaper which the nationalists called the 'White Press Menace.' The newspaper was considered by the African nationalists as a tool to disseminate British imperialist propaganda and to suppress the efforts of the nationalists to acquire political and economic independence.
