The Hutchins Commission, half a century on

Article Abstract:

One former newspaper editor talks about the importance of listening to the opinions of readers as recommended by the Hutchins Commission's report. The report, released in the 1940s, provides five ways by which the press can serve the public. These include providing accurate reports on events, creating a forum for exchanging ideas and reaching all sectors of society. He also recounts how he applied these recommendations to his own newspaper.

The Hutchins Commission, half a century on

Article Abstract:

The renewed interest in the 1947 Hutchinson Report is attributed to its criticism of the media as valuing profits over democracy. It is argued that the report is timely and can be applied to problems currently faced by mass media. These include the effects of deregulation, lack of judicial support for the role of media in promoting democracy and the perceived decline in the quality and quantity of reporting.
