Fighting chance

Article Abstract:

Cable television companies in the United Kingdom (UK) have signed a pay-per-view (PPV) contract with Warner Bros. The four companies, Telewest, General Cable, Diamond Cable and NTL, are hoping to compete with BSkyB which has a monopoly on PPV movies in the UK. It is doubtful whether the companies can compete effectively unless they are fully committed to the project. General Cable has already indicated that it is reducing its pay-TV service. Cable and Wireless Communications has yet to decide if it is going to align itself with BSkyB or the other cable companies.

Article Abstract:

Media and exhibitions concern Emap is set to benefit from the departure of managing director David Arculus. A company obviously faces challenges when a very capable manager such as Arculus leaves, but its main divisions have experienced leaders. It has considerable management depth, and this means that it will not have to replace Arculus. His departure will make it possible to clarify top management responsibilities within the company.
