From inception to reception: the natural history of a news item

Article Abstract:

News media define reality for their audiences, and through the process of presenting facts the media emphasize some facts and viewpoints while deleting or downplaying others. This distortion of reality may not be noticed by the viewers, who are led to believe if they can come to different views on a story they are playing an active role in interpreting the facts themselves. One example is the Guardian's presentation of the False Memory issue, suggesting the superiority of one viewpoint over the other.
