From 'interpretive communities' to 'communities of improvisation.' (conversation evolves in context)(Electronic Democracy)

Article Abstract:

A study of casual conversations in bars in Spain demonstrates how interpersonal conversation is an improvisational medium, and is altered to fit certain situations at different times. The analysis of the attitudes displayed by one man in a bar towards newspaper stories about a rape and murder crime reveals that the man's attitudes and opinions toward the case do not remain static. At times he shows sympathy towards the impoverished underclass, while other times he shows anger at the man accused of the crime.

Language style and lifestyle: The case of a global magazine

A sociological and a linguistic discourse analytical concept of style is articulated by focusing on the linguistic style of a lifestyle magazine, Cosmopolitan, which globally disseminates life-style models for women through its magazines, television programs, lines of cosmetic products and cafes. Cosmopolitan style is a hybrid of different styles, chosen for connotations they bring, for the way they help express the magazines' identity and values.

Politicians as superheroes: the subversion of political authority using a pop cultural icon in the cartoons of Steve Bell

Article Abstract:

Many cultural references are used by Bell in his cartoons and superheroes are featured regularly, or at least the iconography of superhero comic strips. The sales figures and longevity of the comics in which they appear demonstrate clearly enough that superheroes are icons of popular culture.
