Government publicity and conservation: Gifford Pinchot and the frontier press

Article Abstract:

Gifford Pinchot, a forester who created the modern US Forest Service, played a major role in inspiring the government into involving itself in managing the press. As a special agent who made a survey of the new forest reserves in 1897, Pinchot was able to persuade frontier newspaper editors in Seattle, WA, to publish his views about the creation of new federal forest reserves. This experience taught Pinchot that the government would have to employ the techniques of publicity to promote public support for its policies. It also resulted in the contemporary practice of hiring publicity experts, creating press offices and trying to shape press coverage of government policy.

Rolling stones

Article Abstract:

Mattia Preti and Francesco Borromini were 17th century Italian artists whose works are being reassessed. Francesco Borromini has been acclaimed as an architect and he was able to create a sense of movement out of stone. He has had an impact on architecture in western Europe as a whole. Preti, who died in 1699, a century after the birth of Borromini, has been underestimated, and there have been comparisons with Caravaggio, who has become more fanous in modern times.
