Hip hop am main: the localization of rap music and hip hop culture

Article Abstract:

Ethnic minority groups in Germany are using rap and hip hop music as a means of self-expression on topics such as racism and national identity. Hip hop is a spoken form of music originated in inner city New York, and its influences have been traced to oral traditions in Africa. It spread to Europe through MTV and German youth adapted it to address their experience in cities like Frankfurt am Main. In a country with significant problems with minority relations, German rappers see hip hop as a tool for building unity across diverse cultures.
