ITV pursued by BSkyB over DST

Article Abstract:

ITV Network Centre CEO Richard Eyre expressed pleasure that satellite broadcaster BSkyB, is approaching individual ITV firms for its digital satellite television (DST) proposal. Eyre, whose ITV network rejected BSkyB and appears confident of the ITV firms' loyalty, is incredulous of the economics of regional deals. Eyre said all ITV firms are unwavering in their decision to launch ITV and ITV2 only on digital terrestrial. Eyre said that any ITV firm that withdraws from his network for BSkyB, will have to transmit to the whole country but use conditional access technology to turn off everything outside the region.

Quota hopping

Article Abstract:

Satellite braodcaster BSkyB has been criticised by the Independent Television Commission for failing to increase its output of original programming. BSkyB is under the 51% quota on its Sky 1 channel although on its news and sports channels it does achieve the 51% quota enforced by UK government regulations. BSkyB claims it is already putting into practise its corporate strategy of increasing programmes made in the UK and Europe. Figures show that BSkyB has improved its original programming output from 33% in 1995/6 to 40% in 1997.

Brought down to earth

Article Abstract:

The year 1995 marks the 30th anniversary of the launch of Echo 1, the first communications satellite, and it is questioned whether the technology has had its day in the light of increasing competition from fibre-optic cable transmission. Satellites are restricted to the transmission of radio waves, while cable can offer data transmission significantly faster. The future of both technologies is discussed.
