Learning to live with low-cost TV

Article Abstract:

British standards in television programme and film productions are likely to drop as lower costs are forced on the growing satellite and cable television industry. The average price per hour of programmes shown on satellite or cable television is dramatically less than those shown on terrestrial television and many suspect that this trend will continue as more channels become available for broadcasting. Financial support has not been forthcoming from the British government despite many efforts from film producers such as Sir Richard Attenborough.

Pacific action

Article Abstract:

The co-production of Tales of the South Seas shows how complex such projects can become. Initiated in 1994, the 11.25 million pounds sterling series had problems with casting, finance and production crews. The script was re-written everytime a new partner came on board and the casting process was only finished two days before shooting started. The four co-producing companies had to invest 530,000 pounds sterling for each of the 22 episodes and one of the partners, CLT-UFA, bought the majority of distributing rights.
