Leisure hunt

Article Abstract:

There are some opportunities for producers of daytime television programmes at ITV, especially as certain programmes are recommissioned every year. However, any new programme would have to be very strong to beat those which have already become extremely popular. At the BBC, treatment is more important than subject for new programmes. At Channel 4, factual programmes are more likely to be successful than entertainment ones, while at TLC commissions are generally made in series of 15, spanning across three months.

Screening new entries

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of independent producers in the UK are moving into the production of feature films, including Hat Trick, SelecTV, and Kudos. Their move into the big time has been assisted by a recent growth in British Screen funds, thanks to additional funds from BSkyB and the National Lottery. The success of recent British small-budget films has also given the industry a boost, especially the phenomenol success of 'Four Weddings a Funeral'. The industry is discussed further.

Northern exposure

Article Abstract:

The Yorkshire Tyne Tees television region has long been popular as a location for many UK television programmes, but the region's independent broadcast facilities houses have to struggle to stay ahead in a competitive market. Falling budgets and static growth has prompted post-production company Component Broadcast Facilities to call for the region's post-production houses to form a consortium to attract outside business and challenge the London market.
