Online civic participation, and political empowerment: Online media and public opinion formation in Korea

Article Abstract:

The online media power is created by citizens and the influence of the existing conservation media is diminishing while political participation of the citizens is increasing, thereby, speeding the prolonged and delayed process of democratic consolidation. It is concluded that Korean online media are powerful tools for communicative or participatory democracy.

The Internet's political impact and the penetration/participation paradox in Malaysia and Singapore

Article Abstract:

Two neighboring countries, Malaysia and Singapore that implemented early and aggressive programs to roll out public access to the Internet are compared. The penetration/ participation paradox in Malaysia and Singapore is described, suggesting the importance of social and political impact of new communication technologies.

The politics of the web: The case of one newsgroup

The specific discursive strategies by means of which domination, cooption, resistance and exclusion enter the virtual space of Internet communication are presented. The major mechanisms of the liberal domination in the net as well as the operations of power in contemporary liberal societies are discussed.
