Open season

Article Abstract:

Activity is building up in the independent television sector in the UK. Under new rules in the 1996 Broadcasting Act companies may own more than two franchises from 1 November 1996. United has bought the option to purchase a 19.9% stake in HTV from STV surprising Carlton who had been expected to bid for HTV. United claims it is an investment. STV is itself currently involved in a spending round which may involve a takeover of Grampian as well as its acquisition of Caledonian Publishing. Bids are also coming in for South West of England ITV. Contenders are thought to include HTV, United and Carlton.

Going it alone

Article Abstract:

The lack of some members of the Independent Television broadcasting company Network Centre's primetime schedule has impacted the British television channel's popularity. The television broadcasting companies London Weekend Television and HTV chose not to take part in the schedule because they wanted to safeguard their ratings and advertising income. The growing strength of Channel Four, Channel Five and satellite television stations influenced their decision.
