Pisa the action

Article Abstract:

A television documentary about the Leaning Tower of Pisa demonstrates the technique of independent co-production. The hour-long film called The Miraculous Mistake is co-produced by UK independents Pilot Film and TV Productions and Paneikon, an Italian company. Channel 4 will screen the documentary, the UK rights being bought by US WGBH, which also commissioned the film. The central theme of the film is the difficulty facing engineers who are planning to re-construct the tower. Due to holdups with the building work, the documentary will not be finished until the final stage of rebuilding starts in 1998.

Market blues

Article Abstract:

Circle Communications, a television company, floated on the stock market in July 1996 and has announced that profits are significantly lower than expected. The value of Circle shares have since fallen from a high of 202 pence per share to 95 pence on 10 February 1997. Other television companies which are planning to float on the stock market should be aware of the difficulty in meeting the expectations of profits and regular income which city analysts expect, and the effects that this pressure will have on their ways of operating.

Taking produce to market

Article Abstract:

Independent television producers in the UK, may use their ownership of program rights to establish alliances with distribution companies. The producers representative group, Pact, have made a innovative contract with Channel 5 which allows independent producers to keep their rights if they can raise partial funding for new commissions. Independent producers need to examine alternative sources of funding in addition to carefully choosing a distributor who will offer the best financial deal.
