Ratings crunch

Article Abstract:

Channel 5 Broadcasting (C5) will suffer from intense competition from the other terrestrial television stations in the United Kingdom following its launch. The C5 programmers have tried to schedule a variety of programs to suit advertisers requirements and encourage viewers. The budget of 110 million pounds sterling will not necessarily restrict the purchasing of programs with popular appeal. The C5 station will be initially disadvantaged because the station will only cover 60% of the UK homes which will increase to 85% by Dec 1998.

Safety catch

Article Abstract:

Some European television stations produce programs on art which are innovative but arts programs broadcast in the UK do not challenge or inspire the viewer. Books and films are also breaking new ground. Public television should be obliged to provide programs for all of their viewers. Experimental arts programs, which may difficult to watch, should be broadcast in order to challenge and excite the viewer.
